Religion? No thanks. Care for others? Yes please. Can anyone relate?
David S asked:
I grew up in the Christian church for the first 18 years of my life. I attended a nondenominational church for ~16 years and a CRC church for ~2. My high school girlfriend and her family (highly involved in the church, father an elder, mother worked in student ministries) were the most repulsive hypocrites I’ve ever known. That family and the scores of other ‘christians’ I’ve known made me realize how utterly worthless religion is. I don’t make a habit of judging people, but I am far more considerate and caring than my ex-girlfriend (who parties on the weekends, goes to a bible college during the week and plans on attending seminary????). Did I mention that this ‘christian’ girl and I had *** for a year and a half too? Now that I don’t call myself ‘christian’ I don’t have sex, and I won’t until I find my wife. Religion means NOTHING! My beliefs = who cares if there is a god? Does it really make a difference? If there was no god would you just go around treating people like crap? I care about other people simply because this world will implode if all anyone cares about is me me me. I don’t need to go to church every week or pray to an invisible thingy or hand out tracts to be a good person. All I need is me. I’m not perfect, and I’ll never claim to be. My life goals include becoming a doctor, using my skills to help people in need (including not charging outrageous amounts of money for health care and treating the underprivileged), marry an amazing woman, have kids, love my kids more than anything in the world, leave the world a better place than when I came into it and…..finish an Ironman Triathlon
It takes the same amount of effort to love someone that it does to **** them. We may be conditioned to hate, but why not love? This is by no means a complete summary of my beliefs and I admit in my passion I may have misrepresented myself (you aren’t me and therefore you won’t interpret these things exactly as I intended). If you have questions, comments, or you feel some of the same things I do, please let me know! I’m dying to know I’m not alone!!!
Keep being a good person for your own reasons

Gosh you sound so much like me, I really do think religion is a cover for people to get away with bad things. And how can religion be good, they keep to themselfs ie only marry religious people. And pray on children and people in need to convert them. and golly i could keep ranting all night but i will stop, I am just happy that there is someone that thinks very similar to me. Keep being a good person for your own reasons not because god threatens he will send you to hell.

My story is not as extreme as yours but basically, it’s the same. My parents were catholics, although not of the bleeding knees kind. I witnessed the hypocrisy you’re talking about. I rejected Christianity, then all religions by reading and by thinking. I do care a lot but I don’t need a sky daddy to make me do that. I’m not hostile but I will react to hostility. I will help anyone in need (i mean really in need
without hoping any special privilege for it. I don’t give a s… about hell, god, the devil or any myth placed in our lives to scare and to make us obey a greater authority. My criterion is way more subtle than anything ever written in the Bible. I have read thousands of books (literally) and I think that it makes a better big picture for me than anything related in one badly written lousy book. So you wanna know if you’re not alone? My answer is:
You bet you’re not! I’m with you on this one.

I know quite a few people like you, who are quite philosophical, thinking hard, caring, confused, loving, trying…. Just relax and keep your heart open you will be fine…

You are not alone dear, education is the key. When the education level goes up, religious delusions and superstitions quietly fade away….

I could never agree with you more. Christianity has grown to be something completely opposite to Christ-likeness. If you see it well it is just like a political party in which adherence and loyalty has become more important than our duty to one another. I will need something more than the space I have here if i wanted to document my experience with the hypocrites of christianity. This is the way I have come to see it. The church as it is today, with its traditions and structure, is in no way different from the one christ was so at odds with that he was crucified. The simple truth here is that they will be around for a very long time. So many people are eager to know that there is more to this world that they see and the church will always be there to prey on them.
