Need certified death certificate, but I’m not family?

asked:

I need a certified death certificate because an elder guy i took care of died and i was a beneficiary. His family is mad because they were not, so they will not help me out by going to get one. The insurance says I need a certified death certificate. How do I get one if his family won’t help me by getting one?

This is a matter of public record. You go down to your local probate office, and show them the copy of the policy/letter from the insurance company showing you are beneficiary, pay the fee, and they’ll give you a certified copy.

Some states, you can request this online.

Although death certificates are normally only available to family, there is an exception for any person who can demonstrate that they need it for legal reasons. Documentation from the insurance company (1) that you are a beneficiary and (2) that the insurance company requires the death certificate is sufficient to demonstrate to the government agency that issues death certificates that you are entitled to obtain one directly from them, without familial consent.
