I am an Rn in a long term care facility. The area I live has the 5th most per capita millionaires in the country . These seniors are all Dr.s lawyers, Indian chiefs. In my area there is an organization called Volunteers in Medicine where retired Dr.s and nurses care for the uninsured and under insured people in the area. There is a Small Business organization where retired business men volunteer services to people trying to start their own business. Same with accountants doing taxes, lawyers doing legal work. The list goes on and on. They volunteer in the schools, Boys and Girls club. coach sports teams, fund raise for the schools, sponsor children from 3rd world countries to come and get life saving operations. I could go on and on. Seniors have a wealth of experience and knowledge that many are willing to share to help others. Even if they can't physically help any more, they raise money for things they believe in.

Calmness and sanity, common sense, the ability to think through a problem, to learn from mistakes, to help others without expecting compensation.

Senior citizens contribute wisdom, experience, and the opportunities to look back at events and determine what went wrong and what went right. They're a huge resource for our society. (I'm not a senior yet, either!)

A large percent are raising grandchildren ; others prove to be very reliable in the work place . The so-called Golden Years of retirement are becoming a thing of the past - since many are involved in child-raising ; extended educations ; and since generations are living longer , many work past retirement .

Speaking as a senior citizen, I think, some of the things that I do are:
Support local doctors and hospitals -- I visit them alot.
Support local businesses - I buy stuff I don't need and can't afford.
Support local restaurants and cafe's -- I go out for dinner sometimes.
Sorry to say, I can't support my local liquor store. Only buy 1 case of beer a month. Those 30 cans lasts me 30 days.
Also don't support my local tobacco store, I can, 14 oz. pipe tobacco also lasts me a month.
Sometimes, with my age and experience, I am able to offer suggestions that aid in the resolution of problems. But if I were paid for my ideas, I would go broke very quickly.

Well, they teach us how to be civil. We need to care for many of them and that teaches us how to be compassionate as one day hopefully somebody will show us compassion when we are old.
