Senior Citizens, when you were lucky to get some money to buy candy, what did you buy the most?

Lynn asked:

Everyone has a favorite to curb their sweet tooth. I wonder what you
liked as a child, that you still love today and didn’t get tired of. I have
had a passion for Hershey’s chocolate with almonds. I could devour
one in no time. Or a Snickers bar with the caramel and nuts. I love
milk chocolate regardless.

As a child, I spent some of my allowance or pop bottle money on black licorice sticks, Life Savers, or mini peanut butter cups. I don’t care much for black licorice now, but I do like the red licorice mini bites. I still love peanut butter cups, but I buy them once in a great while. As for the Life Savers, I don’t care for them anymore.

When I was a kid and had some spare money I bought treats for my younger brother as I thought he was just adorable, lollies of course - milk bottles, fizzies, musk sticks or sherbet.

Now I tend to go for dark chocolate which I share with my family. I don’t buy myself treats when out, but I do have a coffee when I do the grocery shopping.

I used to buy penny candy as it was called back then like the gummy pop bottles and wax lips, and many types they don’t even make anymore like the candy cigarettes…can you believe it!

Ah yes, the penny candy…sometimes two for a penny! When you had just spent a couple of hours on your bicycle looking for pop bottles to turn in for the deposit, you wanted as much for your money as possible.

As I got older I preferred caramels and then chocolate and if you could combine caramel and chocolate even better.

Now, I prefer just a good piece of either quality chocolate or just a plain flat Hershey’s bar.

When I was growing up on the way home from school I use to stop at this drug store and buy pumpkin seeds they were 3 cents a box, then there were little wax bottles filled with this juice you would bite off the wax top, drink the juice and then chew the wax like gum, ick! and then there were Mary Janes. Now my choice of candy is a Hershey milk chocolate bar with almonds.

Hershey’s bar with almonds, but usually it was Tootsie Roll Pops, Tootsie Rolls or Lifesavers.

I could get 6 nickel candy bars for a quarter plus a penny tax in 1960 at our local grocer. I got Hershey, Mounds, Chuckles, Mars bar, Salted nut roll (in the yellow cellophane wrapper) and a Cherry Hump.
Today I still grab a Hershey if I’m having a sugar attack.

I used to get Holloway suckers at the movie theatre. They were like hard caramel on a stick and would last through a whole movie.

I also loved licorice from the penny candy store.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — used to cost a nickle and they were bigger than they are now, or else I was smaller and they seemed bigger.

They are still my favorite, only now I buy the little, tiny ones because I don’t want a whole big candy bar, then proceed to eat the whole bag! Well, at least my intentions are good. . . .

Charms suckers- they came in grape and cherry. I loved the cherry.
Penny candy. The dots on the paper, licorice, Kool Aid, we used to just each it out of the little bag. I loved and still do buy the 3 Musketeers bar. Of course Hershey’s chocolate bar, Charleston Chews, Milk Duds, Ju Ju Bees, Dots, Those wax red lips. and wax tubes filled with juice. Lots to pick from, too many to mention them all.
