How many of you senior citizens have discovered?

Ladybug II asked:

That those 3 lb boxes of bacon bits and pieces as well as the ham pieces that are sold for seasoning, a lot of those pieces are decent size for pan frying to go with your eggs in the mornings? Saves a lot of money which we seniors need.

When I was married to my ex he liked to have when we could find those boxes, I think they were more like 4 or 5 pounds here though. I don’t eat pork at all so I don’t buy it now. They were a lot cheaper than buying sliced bacon, smoked hog jowls, usually sold around New Year’s Day to season black-eyed peas in the south, are also cheaper than bacon, but they have to be sliced up since they are whole.

Amen to that! Yes, I buy those boxes especially when they are on sale, I try to get 2 or 3 and put them in the freezer. And there is plenty of space, can’t afford too many groceries. Now that we aren’t getting a cost of living raise for 2 years, that is not going to help! There are a lot of nice pieces in them.

I know those who buy it for that purpose…for myself, I can’t do that…too much salt and saturated fat…alas, old age!

I used to use the bacon bits on salads then realized how super salty they were so stopped using them. Also I don’t know if they come with the fat that a senior shouldn’t be eating (weight gain, cholesterol, high blood pressure).

Ladybug, this hadn’t crossed my mind. Bacon being usually $4/pound, it’s a great idea. Bacon bits and pieces, I’ve never seen sold or mentioned, though. I guess you’d just ask a butcher for some. Thanks.

Great tip. Hubby shops - He agrees - good idea - we also add feta cheese to our scrambled eggs.

No salt - feta cheese is salty enough.

That will work for Ham and Baby Lima Beans.

    Thank you.
    DeeJay.

My Dad used to get those boxes. Yes, they can be used for bacon eggs. Also, put some into a pot of bean soup or pea soup or potato soup. He also used to fry some up and add it to cooked potatoes and onion with a little milk mixed in for a plain but tasty supper. Of course, you can also fry some up crispy and add to salads.

With a house full of kids you bet I know that. Makes good BLT sandwiches for supper too.

I live alone so I don’t buy 3 pound boxes of anything other than flour and sugar, but I remember my mother buying the bits and pieces box. There we plenty slices that could be fried for breakfast. What couldn’t made wonderful potato soup. My mother could stretch a food dollar.
