Have senior citizens ever had any unusual food cravings?

handyman is a Rat asked:

I’ve heard of people eating chalk. When I was a young girl, I ate flour right out of the bag. My mom would find bowls full of flour in my room with a flour-encrusted spoon. Sounds icky, right? Have you had any unusual cravings?

I used to eat the seeds in apples. I thought they tasted like chocolate covered cherries. This was before I knew they had cyanide in them!

Nothing that strange but sometimes I craveCat Food like sardines right out of the can or Pickled Herring or Tuna Fish with pickles.I have to eat it until I’m satisfied, then I won’t want again for awhile.
Just as an afterthought-remember the dorky kid in grade school that would eat the paste out of jar!!! NASTY!!

I ate ice as a teenager, had to be crunching on something and I found out later it was because I was anemic, and took Geritol at the age of 14, the craving for ice stopped.

When I was a young lad (preteen) I used to take about a quarter cup of evaporated milk and mix in a lot of sugar until it turned into a goo and eat that. The very thought of it now turns my stomach.

Now, I don’t want to gross anybody out or nothing, but…

When I was a young girl–probably about 6 or 7, the road crews came around to pour new tar for our streets one spring. This was thick black goopy stuff that had very little gravel in it. In the hot temperatures of the summer, this tar got so soft that if you stepped on it, you would leave your footprints behind. So one day I was playing with it with a small stick–just putting the stick in the soft tar and twirling it around. But I noticed that when I lifted up a bit of it, it smelled like licorice! Well, I have always LOVED black licorice! So I took a taste of the tar to see if it would taste like licorice too…and to my mind it DID!

I ate about 4 dips of the stick of this tar before my brother caught me doing it and called me names and that was the last of that!

(It was still not as bad as my sister! SHE would eat worms or grasshoppers or anything disgusting like that when my older brothers told her too–just because they told her to! I told her that was disgusting and she just laughed at me.)

My only odd cravings are Indian Naan Bread baked in a Clay Tandori Oven. It’s my new drug of choice.

Years ago, I used to crave for licorice roots.
Over the years, they became less and less available, and I managed to lose the addiction… then:
Last week I was passing a shop, and saw some on sale… my craving, currently satisfied, is going to start all over again.
    Eh eh eh.

I liked to eat baking soda and chewed on paper like it was chewing gum.

I still eat raw potatoes (not if they have any green on them).
I recall a craving for coal which I satisfied for years before giving it up.
I can understand Rita’s craving for tarmacadam as I used to follow the Tar Wagon but only for the smell which I found Irresistable.
I also loved the smell of new leather in a shoe shop.

I remember when I was young - when many of my relatives had coal buckets - the little toddlers were always trying to chew on the coal.

My Granny always said their body was lacking something that was in coal.

I also remember some small children eating dirt.

Now when I think about it - as I’m writing this.

    Were those little ones hungry?

What was the adults thinking of?

Did the little kiddles - really know they needed coal and thought - I think I’ll chew on a piece of coal and curb my craving? LOL
DeeJay. Probably chewed on coal - I wonder?

Hi hm, not since I was pregnant.
I would have been the one following Rita behind the tar wagon or licking a freshly painted wooden fence, yum. or stuck my nose right into a log burning fire….. oh bliss.
I still like the smell of pine logs on a fire but I don’t climb the walls anymore to get to one.
Yours sounds like a craving for carbohydrates which can often happen if you are used to a diet like mine which incorporates pastries and potato products.
