What is wrong with the health care in Canada for elderly persons?
Patricia Y asked:
I am a support worker for Mentally Challenged and Elderly persons. I am very disturbed at the quality of care. During nightime hours I have observed some frightening instances such as one time and elderly was made to sleep in his own ***** and urine until morning time due to lack of staffing in Nursing Home and semi Independant Living facilities. Also. from what i have witnessed there is not enough care givers to feed the clients and or patients at meal times therfore meals are being sent back and not givn to patients and or clients. What can we do as human beings to resolve such a devastaing issue?

Unfortunately this is becoming all too common in Canada. Our once worldwide respected health care system is collapsing on itself. It is certainly not just the metally ill elderly who are getting substandard health care, it is everyone in this country. How many times do we here about someone who dies in an ambulance being shuttled back forth from hospital to hospital looking for one that will take the patient in or years spent on waiting lists for necessary surgery, patients dying because they cant get the surgery they need in time etc.

I only read the initial question because I am so tired but what is wrong with the health care system in the entire world is that senior citizens should receive free health care period. Unfortunately the politicians are more concerned about getting exhorbitant salaries and full pay retirement checks for life than taking care of the people they were hired to serve. I mean aren’t they Public Servants? Sometimes I get them confused with ROYALTY.

I **** to tell u that it’s not happening in Canada.. I worked in nursing homes for a LONG time.. We would have 1 aid to every 20 patients (total care ) at times..We only had 2 hours to feed everyone..u can’t do it.. so some of the aids mixed the food together to make it look like they tried to feed them and they just wouldn’t eat.. We do rounds every 2 hours but that doesn’t mean that the resident can’t go after our rounds.. we have been so short staffed at times that we only make rounds 2 x in an 8 hour shift. The big issue is:; they are not willing to pay aids anything to work.. I could have worked at McD s for the same salary and not be spit on, kicked, bit, working with SHI t and being treated like Shi t from the nurses.. The nurses here will NOT get up off their **** and do anything to help the aides (even if they have nothing to do)..I have had nurses to tell me to leave patients in the shower unattended just to bring them something..and if I didn’t. I got in trouble. Being an aide is hard work and the pain ***** and we get no recognition.. therefore most people won’t do it.. they sure won’t do it for $6.00 an hour.. We need to insist that our nursing homes have more help no matter what they have to pay them.. and 1 aid to 20 total care patients isn’t what I mean..

Palliative care facilities are often privately run businesses who are trying to keep costs down. Under-staffing in the evening hours is a way to do this.
Such places should be reported to the police, elder abuse is a crime. They are no affiliated with Canadian health care. The majority of the support workers are not federally funded.
