We will!
With your help and with the help of other concerned citizens that our outraged by this misuse of power.
NASGA is a civil rights organization composed of victims and other concerned people who seek to eliminate the abuses of court appointed guardians/conservators of incapacitated senior’s nationwide.
Our mission is to STOP private and public court appointed non-family member, third-party guardians and conservators and members of the legal profession who misuse the court system to benefit themselves.
NASGA was formed in the spring of 2006 by Robin C. Westmiller of southern California whose father, Ruby Cohen was victimized by a Florida guardian who cost her family their entire life savings and nearly her father’s life. Our membership is now comprised of victims and their families from more than 25 states across the country. They have all been forced to sit by helplessly and watch their loved ones suffer as they were exploited, injured, and frequently left to die alone while under the control of a non- family member, third-party court appointed guardian.
Those of us who have been victimized by the guardianship system know the frustrations we’ve experienced in our efforts to find assistance and obtain justice in a seemingly unjust legal system. Legislative statutes are totally ineffective when judges and law enforcement agencies ignore them. Government organizations are understaffed and underpaid and the majority of Elder Law attorneys are inexperienced in this fairly new area of law. Most are unable or unwilling to take on a futile endeavor especially when the client has little or no money to pay their fees while the guardian is draining the same family’s assets to pay for their own legal representation.
State Bar Associations defend the attorneys. Elected officials seize the opportunity for a new campaign issue to appeal to voters by signing their names to ineffective legislation. Judges turn a deaf ear to the pleas of elderly victims who are being legally robbed of their life savings, their dignity and sometimes their very lives. Loving sons, daughters and other family members exhaust themselves emotionally and financially trying to fight a legal system which is suppose to protect the very people it’s destroying. Each individual states have their own probate laws, and several “hot lines” and “adult protective agencies” but there is no centrally organized advocacy association where victims can go for assistance, emotional support and low cost or free legal representation. Until now.
The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION TO STOP GUARDIAN ABUSE is not just another place to discuss personal horror stories of which there are too many, or offer token solace and empty promises. This Association will ACT to put an end to this insidious new crime by using the power of the press, the power of the political system and the power of the PEOPLE to do exactly what the title’s name says.
